A quick update!

I apologize for the delay in posting! I’ve been a little under the weather for a week or so, but I’m hoping that will ease up soon and I’m trying to get all caught up on my weddings/emails/orders/etc :-)

We also went on a road trip adventure to Tulsa this past weekend to visit with Steven’s mom (affectionately known as LaLa) — the kids had a blast but I am bummed that I did not feel up to taking pictures :-( However, I had to snap this one: Emma (who knows I have a fascination with sharks) did her best to make her mom feel better by seeking out the only shark I’ve ever seen on a carousel! I thought that was too sweet :-)

The Challenges of Photographing a 17-Month-Old!

1 - They are FAST! As in, never sitting still for more than 2 seconds — and in those 2 seconds, they are always looking anywhere but at you!

2 - They understand digital! I made the mistake of showing my son the back of my camera once after a shoot — so now he wants to look at the back of the camera after EVERY. SINGLE. PICTURE.

3 - They’ve already learned “CHEESE” — I’m not sure how this happened, but every time Logan sees a camera, he stops for a split second and says “cheeezzz” and then dashes off — teasing me every so often with a quick glance and another “cheesy” expression (pardon the pun!)…

Despite these challenges, I will never give up on my efforts to capture him, just as he is today…because next month, he’ll be a completely different little boy (though I’m betting, he’ll still say “cheezzzzzz” whenever he sees me coming) :-)

Can anyone guess what is going on in this picture?

I’ll give you a hint…it happened in a Tom Cruise movie :-)

Slowly but surely…

We’ve made some progress on the gallery! On Thursday night, my mom, Steven, and I stayed up at the studio for a few hours, framing pictures and hanging them on the walls…we’re not there yet, but we’re getting closer! I’ve still got two more walls to decorate — one wall will have bridal and wedding images (all in color) and the other side will be all black and white…I will definitely take some pictures once it is completed!!! If YOU have a favorite image that you want me to display, please let me know! I had a really tough time picking out images (and still have some to order) — so let me know!!!

We had a fun session with a really, really sweet family this morning — right after I got the new sign for my door (so exciting!)…we’re heading out to a wedding in Fort Worth tomorrow, so I will be sure to post more soon! Have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Thankful on Thursday…

As part of my re-organizing/re-energizing kick, I am taking some time to read a few books that have been recommended to me on how to get it all together and make it all happen (my paraphrasing!). I have noticed a common thread amongst several different articles, and that is the miracle and power of gratitude.

While I hope that I have lived a thankful life thus far, I am going make it a habit to intentionally take time daily to consider all that I have to be so grateful for…by doing this, I will get the focus off of what I do not have or need (or think I need) and soak up all of the goodness that is right in front of me!!!

A few on today’s list…

- I am thankful that my husband was not hurt when he smacked my less-than-a-year-old car (that I love) into a wall on Tuesday…it is something we will laugh about in the years to come :-)

- I am SO thankful for my two little monsters children…my life would be empty (and painfully quiet) without them.

- I am thankful for the opportunity to make a living doing what I love — even though being a photographer may not be the most glamorous career, I feel there is real value in being able to capture precious, once-in-a-lifetime memories for my clients, and there isn’t anything else I would want to do with all of my “leisure” time! (Except maybe enjoy some leisure!)

- I am thankful for a wonderful business partner/life supporter/all-around encourager all wrapped into one: my mom!

- I am thankful that my sister and her husband are already on their way here from Austin and should make it in time for us to all eat dinner together!

- And I am thankful that all of my studio prints that just arrived turned out great — and that we get to go frame them and hang them in the studio tonight (the gallery will finally be complete)!!!

You have to STOP before you can really start…

My mom is visiting this week…for those of you that know her, you know what a blessing this is! My mom has this amazing knack for coming into the chaos that is my life and (in the span of about 30 minutes) getting me re-organized, re-energized, and inspired to go tackle whatever obstacles may be in my way! This week, she is here to help me finish up the studio (or at least get really close!) and get the house all organized before she heads back to school for the Fall (can I tell you how depressed I am that I have not yet convinced her to retire? I have some plans that will help change her mind, but I guess she can teach for one more year…)

Anyways, I am taking complete advantage of her visit to really STOP and evaluate all of my plans and goals and processes for the rest of the year — to come up with a comprehensive strategy for 1,000 Words Photography and our household! I have found that when I try to do this during the year at the same time that I am editing sessions, weddings, and trying to remember to bring snacks for Emma’s class, it just doesn’t happen. I have many good intentions, but something more pressing always gets in the way…and so the status quo continues on, with my dreams of a better tomorrow pushed off until well, tomorrow…Am I too dramatic? :-)

The point is, I think it is really important for me to STOP and take inventory of where I am at and where I want to be in order to figure out exactly how to get there! That’s my goal for this week any way :-)

Here are two quick pics of the kids at the studio (they were *helping* us unload)…we have our next studio session this Friday! Can’t wait to get our full schedule up and running this Fall!!!

A successful day…

I have to confess…some days, when the kids are tucked into bed and I’ve finally collapsed on the couch to watch one (or two!) mindless shows with Steven before sleep overwhelms me, I think back over the day…and I wonder what in the world I actually accomplished! I know I did half a load of laundry, got the dishes in the dishwasher (but forgot to start it!), played a vicious game of cards with Emma (her rules, not mine — so somehow, she always wins!), edited a million or so images, and made dinner (delivery counts, right?)…but throughout the whole day, no matter what I was working on at the time, I was thinking about the hundred or so other things that needed to get done. It’s a constant state of discontent…and it’s been making me so frustrated! So, yesterday, I came up with this idea…I have made a list of things I need to accomplish each day that will make my day successful…so, if I am working on something that is on that list, I can relax and put myself fully into the task — knowing that I am one step closer to a victorious day! What do you think of this idea? I am going to give it a try for a week and see how it goes…Everything is mental with me, so if I THINK I am being productive (even when I am reading “Thomas the Tank Engine” to Logan for the fifth time), then I will feel productive! Sometimes the important things don’t “sound” important, but when it comes down to it, they are the things that matter most…

Here are a few things on my “successful day” list…

1 - Everyone brushes their teeth in the morning and at night before bed!

2 - I get at least 30 minutes of exercise.

3 - I play with my kids!

4 - I read to my kids!

5 - I accomplish the 2-4 “most important projects” for 1,000 Words Photography.

6 - I complete one FULL load of laundry (washed, dried, and put away). Why is that so hard for me?

7 - I document my kids (take a picture, shoot a video, or journal some of their funny sayings/stories).

8 - We end each night with a bedtime prayer and a story.

I won’t bore you with the whole list, but hopefully you get the idea! Have I missed anything?

We’ll see how this goes :-) Here is my #7 for today…Logan, right after he woke up from his nap, bed-head and all!!!

Staying cool in the *sweltering* Texas heat!

It was really, really hot when we went out to do Katie’s bridals — the kind of heat that hits you as soon as you step out of the car and keeps you from taking a truly deep breath until you are back inside…but Katie did such an awesome job looking cool and refreshed throughout the whole shoot! Here are a few of my favorites :-)

The first studio session — yea!!!

I was so excited to have our first studio session this weekend! Yes, only the camera room is complete, but it was still so much fun to have one of my favorite families in to have the first shoot! I have been blessed to document the growth of this family over the past few years (it is amazing how quickly time goes by!!!) — and I was really thankful that they came out for this inaugural session :-)

I am still catching up after our whirlwind weekend, but I wanted to share a few quick images that made me smile on my first look through the images!

The busiest weekend ever…

I am so sorry for the delay in posting…this weekend was literally our busiest ever, and I must confess that I absolutely crashed on Sunday afternoon! On Saturday, my mom and I had the honor of photographing two beautiful weddings (our coverage began at 6:30am that morning and wrapped up about 11:30pm that evening, with a two hour relax and re-charge break in the middle) :-) Then, on Sunday, I was so excited to have our first studio clients (who just happen to be one of my favorite families!) in for a session!!! I will be sure to post lots of images soon, but for now, here is one of my favorite picks from Saturday’s first wedding!
